What is Zika virus disease

Zika virus disease is a viral infection that is primarily transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, the same type of mosquitoes that spread dengue fever and chikungunya. The Zika virus is a flavivirus, which is related to other viruses such as West Nile, dengue, and yellow fever.

The most common symptoms of Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain, and red eyes (conjunctivitis). Other symptoms may include muscle pain, headache, and vomiting. Many people with Zika virus infection do not have symptoms or have only mild symptoms.

Zika virus disease can also cause severe birth defects in babies born to women who are infected during pregnancy. These birth defects, collectively known as congenital Zika syndrome, can include microcephaly (a smaller than normal head), brain damage, and other developmental problems.

There is no specific treatment or vaccine for Zika virus disease. Treatment is generally focused on relieving the symptoms, and most people recover fully within a few days to a week. The best way to prevent Zika virus infection is to avoid mosquito bites and to take precautions if you are traveling to an area where Zika virus is known to be present.
